How Run Flat Tyres Work

A runflat has a reinforced sidewall stiff enough to carry the car with no air in the tyre. Lose pressure and the tyre holds its shape instead of collapsing, so you steer to a fitter rather than stopping where you are. Michelin New Zealand puts the limit at up to 80km at up to 80km/h, and Bridgestone publishes the same figures. Michelin says it varies by tyre, and Bridgestone ties its figure to test conditions, so treat your own sidewall and handbook as the number that counts. Drive gently, keep it short, and get to a tyre shop.

Does Your Car Take Runflats

Start at the sidewall. BMW said in 2005 it was the first to fit them as standard, on the 1 Series, 3 Series and Z4, and on Mini. Michelin says the marking varies from maker to maker. Most of ours carry RF in the size, like 225/45RF18, the marking TyreSafe points to, and our Hankooks say RUNFLAT in the name instead. Michelin uses ZP or EMT, and other brands use their own letters, so check the sidewall or the placard in the door frame. One more thing worth knowing. BMW and TyreSafe both say runflats need a working tyre pressure monitoring system, because you may not feel the tyre go down. BMW calls it mandatory wherever runflats are fitted, and TyreSafe calls it essential.

Find Your Runflat Size

Read the size off your sidewall. Something like 225/45RF18. Pick it in the search above and every runflat we hold in that size comes up, full price on each one. We stock 16 inch to 20 inch, from 195 wide up to 275, in V, W and Y speed ratings, and a few wider than that. Match what your car came with. Don't know what the numbers mean? Our tyre size guide sorts it out.

What Runflats Cost, And Why

We're aiming to be the cheapest tyres NZ wide once fitting, delivery and the stewardship fee are counted. Be ready for a runflat to cost more than a standard tyre. In our range it does, in every size we stock both ways. You're paying for the sidewall that gets you home. What you won't pay is a fee you didn't see. GST and the stewardship fee are in the price on the page, delivery to our fitting partners is free, and fitting and balancing at one of our partners is from $34.99 a tyre, shown before you pay.

What You Give Up For That Sidewall

Runflats aren't free of trade-offs, and you should hear them before you buy. In our range they cost more than a standard tyre, and we stock far fewer runflat sizes than standard ones. And the makers do not agree on whether one can be repaired afterwards, which is further down this page. What you get back is not walking home, and not kneeling on the shoulder with a jack in the dark.

Can You Fit Standard Tyres Instead

Careful here. TyreSafe is blunt about it. Runflats must never be mixed with standard tyres on the same car, and the tyre makers and retailers advise against fitting runflats to a car that wasn't designed for them. So it's all four or none, and if your car came with runflats, check what's in the boot before you switch. No spare, no jack, and a standard tyre means waiting for a tow. Talk to your fitter before you change what your car came with.

After You've Run One Flat

Once a runflat has been driven on with no air, don't assume it can be patched. The makers don't agree on this. Continental says a punctured runflat is not repairable and should be replaced. Michelin says one of its own can be repaired once, by a professional, unless the sidewall says otherwise. So get it looked at by your fitter, go by what's written on the tyre, and replace it if there's any doubt. It's the sidewall doing the work, and you can't see inside it.
